I am currently running an archaeological project in Peru (www.diggingperu.wordpress.com) and I’ve been experimenting with using GigaPan to document the research. I’ve created a profile shot of both excavations and the profile created by a modern irrigation canal (http://gigapan.com/galleries/9148/gigapans/111897). My goal is to create an interactive Virtual Reality feature that allows the user to zoom into features on the GigaPan and pull up additional photos and/or information about excavated artifacts and construction features. I was playing around with Pano2VR (from Garden Gnomes Software) but GigaPan is a bit too big for that I believe. Is there a way to create similar virtual reality experiences with GigaPans? |

Try GPXtag http://www.gpxtag.com. Its not only for social media tagging but also allows labeling and adding descriptive text in different parts of the image for science, education and research. Allows taking of snapshots and sharing them via email, Facebook or Twitter. |

I don’t know anything about the alternative systems but I can vouch for KRPano which is one of the most trouble-free and actively-supported pieces of software I have ever used. |
