Rail baron James J. Hill built this arched stone bridge across the Mississippi River for his Great Northern Railway. In order to line up with the Minneapolis Union Depot on the far side of the river, it curves as it crosses the Mississippi. This was a daring design decision and critics predicted it would cause the bridge to fail. The bridge is now pedestrianized and part of the St Anthony Falls Heritage Trail. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
