Grand Canyon GigaView
27 GigaPansViews
A gigapixel virtual tour via the Colorado River of America's premier natural attraction.
Grand Canyon GigaView was crowd-source funded via Kickstarter.com in the spring of 2010. It's 27 images, most of which are full 360 degree panoramas, were captured alongside the Colorado River over the course on an 18 day private rafting trip. The photographer rowed one of the rafts through over 180 named rapids in the course of the 225 mile trip.
To date, Grand Canyon GigaView has been explored by almost half a million people on various platforms including GigaPan.com, Photosynth.net, Google Earth, Bing Maps, and 360Cities.net.

Deer Creek Falls is a popular stop at river mile 136. The thunderous waterfall has stunned river runners from the very beginning.
"Just after dinner we pass a stream on the right, which leaps into the Colorado by a direct fall of more than 1000 feet, forming a beauti...-

Located at River Mile 116.5, Elve's Chasm is a refreshing stop with a quick hike up to this slot canyon where one can swim, climb, and jump into the crystal clear pool. With shadows moving quickly and covering the swimming area, I was forced to over-expose the downstream vie...-

One of the jewels of the American West, Havasu Creek is named for the people who have lived along it for at least the last eight hunded years. The Havasupai (the-people-of-the-blue-green-waters) have had a long struggle to hold onto their traditional lands in the face of we...-

The Great Unconformity - Welcome to the surface of the Earth, approx. 550 million years ago. The first layer of rock, at ground level here, is called the Vishnu Schist. It consists of several complex sets of sedimentary and volcanic that were laid down 1.8 billion years ag...-

Another view of the camp at Lower Bass at river mile 108.5. Christy had been hiking with me, but went ahead down to camp arriving just as this image was being captured. She can be seen three times around camp. William W. Bass established a tourist camp in this area about 1890, and later built a trans-Canyon trail ...

Taken from a rock cliff on the top of the Vishnu Schist overlooking our party's boats at Lower Bass Camp, a place that was the actual surface of the Earth at least 210 million years ago, if not 1.2 billion years ago. Just before shooting this image, I had spotted a Chuckwall...-

A close up view of a Grand Canyon riparian area, this GigaPan was taken in a spot that rarely sees the burning sun. Just above a terrific swimming hole, this bend in the creek was the only shady spot I could reach without wading equipment across (again). Shinumo Creek supports a wide ecosystem through arid terrain, a...

Lower Bass is a choice camp. The gradual incline of its huge beach invites gaming and relaxation. The jutting fins of Vishnu Schist form hallways which lead to the groover or a sunny shower spot. The late evening sun and morning shadow all make for a lazy camp. We were joyous to find that the veteran raft guides on...

In December of 1966, a historic storm sent debris flows, flash floods full of boulders with the consistency of wet concrete, down many of the drainages in the Grand Canyon. Crystal Rapid was changed from a placid riffle into an enormous rapid with deadly consequences. High water events in 1983 and 1996 further transfor...
