The Brallier Formation shale is a Devonian-aged turbidite sequence shed off the Acadian orogeny. This sample was collected from an outcrop on new New Route 55, just west of Moorefield, WV. The Brallier Formation can be seen in this image by Alan Pitts: gigapan.org/gigapans/97256 Image made as part of the M...

This roadcut perserves ripple marks that are now nearly two billion years old. Tilted during the Penokean Orogeny, these rocks are also some of the oldest redbeds (evidence of an atmosphere with free oxygen) in the world.

At Ableman's Gorge, a former quarry, 1.7 billion year old ripple marks form a vertical wall scores of feet high. Stop and think about what that means -- the sand that eventually became this rock was laid down at a time when the only living things on planet were unicellular. And the forces that can stand this up to vert...

Taken from just east of the traditional tourist lookout (see Grand Canyon 1 when I get that posted) - it is looking NE-ish. For a really fun time, find all the hikers! And the rest stop/restrooms. Phantom Ranch is in there too.

Rhythmites are rhythmically-bedding sedimentary deposits, deposited in a sedimentary basin with some regularly-shifting condition like tidal cycles or day/night changes. The gigapan shows an outcrop of the Konnarock Formation, a bit east of Konnarock, Virginia, in the Blue Ridge province. They are Proterozoic in age. T...

Geological contact between the older crystalline rocks and the overlying sandstone. The blue at the end is there to make the panorama large enough for the site.

This is a roadcut/drivewaycut along Shore Airport Road, just northeast of Ticonderoga, New York. My primary goal in shooting this macroGigaPan was to illustrate sedimentary structures including those spectacular weathered crossbeds near the bottom of this image. Can you make out any other interesting sedimentary stru...

NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit welcomed the beginning of 2006 on Earth by taking this striking panorama of intricately rippled sand deposits in Gusev Crater on Mars. This is an approximate true-color rendering of the "El Dorado" ripple field provided by Spirit over the New Year's holiday weekend. The view spans a...
