At 1559 feet altitide, Bishop Peak is San Luis Obispo's most popular mountain hike. It is located on the edge of the city, rising in a line of nine peaks that run from the city west to Morro Bay and on into the ocean.
Climbing Bishop Peak is moderately difficult, though there is an excellent groomed trail that was built by, and is maintained by the City of San Luis Obispo. Bishop Peak is part of the city' extensive open space system of parks and trails. These, in combination with zoning that prohibits any building above a certain altitude, make San Luis Obispo a beautiful place to live, and a great place for outdoor activities (sounds like PR copy, but it's true).
Carrying my horrible tripod and the GigaPan unit (and the camera) to the top was arduous for me, but worth the trouble. It took me about twice as long as usual to get up there. I took water, but not enough water, so ended up mooching water from others who came to the top (people were ver generous). The weather was perfect and I made a handful of new friends as people came up to the top to visit my panoramic perch. It was a fabulous day, and the photo turned out very nicely.
The photo took over two hours to make, with 2,058 individual frames collected for the complete image. Stitching took over 11 hours.
