This photo depicts a wintery welcome to the quiet season in Glacier National Park. Taken at the park's west entrance near West Glacier, MT, the traffic along this road is minimal since the road is open only another 10 miles past this point in winter. Visitors at this time of year are limited by open roadways and trails, but for those who ski or snowshoe a winter world of discovery awaits. Snowmobiles are not allowed in Glacier National Park. While taking this photo I saw and heard signs of spring: a flock of migrating Canada geese, varied thrushes trilling among the old growth cedars, and the Middle Fork of the Flathead River rushing at higher levels behind me. Despite the monochrome appearance, spring is on the way.
