Plot MA4 is one of four 50x50m permanent study plots established near Monahan Flats in 1998 in alpine tundra south of the Alaska Range. White spruce trees are uncommon at this elevation, but some spruce seedlings were found in each plot and tagged in 1998. By 2012, the number of spruce seedlings in this plot had tripled compared to 1998.
This orthophoto mosaic is made from 16 low altitude kite aerial photographs aligned in Photoshop. Each spruce seedling was decorated with pink flagging before the plot was photographed, and this image will now serve as the best record of the 2012 status of spruce seedlings in the plot. Seedlings are labelled with numbered metal tags, and the identity of each seedling is now linked to this image.
White masonry twine was stretched along the west and south sides of the plot (north is up).
