Description

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was founded in 1772 by Spanish missionaries traveling through the future state of California. Their leader, Father Junipero Serra, who was originally from Majorca, Spain, led a team of 15 Franciscan friars through Alta California to establish the missions and to convert the native people of the region. In their efforts, the friars built 21 missions, many of which are still in existence today. Mission San Luis Obispo is a property of the Diocese of Monterey, and is an active Roman Catholic church. In addition to masses and other church events, the mission is often used as a hall for musical performances of choral and orchestral music. The building has considerable resemblance to the original structure, but the roof has been changed to tile, and the building has been modernized several times to better withstand earthquakes and to increase its capacity. The Mission Plaza, once a thoroughfare of California Highway 101, was closed to traffic in 1968, creating the plaza that includes lovely pathways and public areas, an amphitheater and a fountain.

Statues of a bear, children, and fish enhance the fountain in the plaza. These statues were made by Paula Zima, a local sculptor and artist who now makes her residence in Santa Fé, New Mexico. The Mission Plaza is home to annual events including the I Madonnari street painting festival and many others.
