Chavin de Huantar is an important Early Horizon (800-200 B.C.) ceremonial center in the Andes Mountains. Located at the junction of two rivers, its strategic location allowed for religious pilgrams from the desert coast and the Amazonian rainforest to participate in the cult activities. Pictured here is the monumental core of the site with three buildings situated in a U-shaped formation around a sunken rectangular plaza.
