- Description

The Wumen or "Meridian" Gatehouse is the "front door" to the Forbidden City (Bu Gong in Mandarin). Its outstreched wings form a vast courtyard where tourist vendors and crowds of visitors reign. At 38 meters high, these are the tallest buildings in the Emperor's Palace complex. The five "Phoenix Towers" crown the Gatehouse podium. The main ceremonial entrance to the inner Palace grounds is through the three relatively tiny archways at the centre of the composition. The official Beijing tourism website is found at: www.ebeijing.gov.cn
/ and is a good starting point to find out more.
