Dr. Jay Kaufman of the University of Maryland, who provided this sample, interprets these to be microbial sulfate reduction spots on the bedding surface of the Neoproterozoic (Cryogenian) Santa Helena Formation of the Bambui Group in south-central Brazil. The microbial spots show clear cores and cortices, which notable have distinct sulfur-33 and sulfur-34 abundance differences.
The sample is 12 cm across at its widest point.
