SR826-SR836 - Bridge 19 on Pier 10 nearly complete. This gigapan was taken from a point that just a few hours ago was the center of the busy Eastbound artery of SR-836, whose traffic has now been diverted to a new section of this huge interchange project. If you look carefully at Pier 10 which is supporting the current section of the bridge, you will see that there is a center section called a Pier Segment, mounted directly over the Pier. The Segment is anchored to the pier and balanced by four huge jacks. Then sections are added one at a time to the left and then to the right to keep the bridge balanced, aided by the jacks. There are currently 11 segments installed on either side of the Pier Segment. A full section consists of 12 (or 11) segments forward and 12 (or 11) segments back, On this Bridge #19,there is one more segment to be installed on each side. Then the gap of about 1 foot between the sections will be formed and poured in place. After allowing this poured segment to cure for a few days, the Gantry will be moved to the next Pier and will begin to install the next section. The real beauty of this type of construction is that it is totally overhead and requires no cranes or other ground support, therefore there are no obstacles (cranes etc.) on the ground to impede traffic so the traffic keeps flowing all during the construction.
