Description

This New Global Landcover Dataset was created simply by combining two of the best currently available Global datasets: GLOBCOVER (Global Landcover) and Landscan (Global Population Density.)

GLOBCOVER by itself does not sufficiently depict human settlement and agricultural activities.
By adding Landscan Population Density to Globcover a better depiction of such settlements and
agriculture patterns can be obtained while still retaining the GLOBCOVER land classification schemes
in less populated areas as follows:

11 Post-flooding or irrigated croplands (or aquatic)
14 Rainfed croplands
20 Mosaic cropland (50-70%) / vegetation (grassland/shrubland/forest) (20-50%)
30 Mosaic vegetation (grassland/shrubland/forest) (50-70%) / cropland (20-50%)
40 Closed to open (>15%) broadleaved evergreen or semi-deciduous forest (>5m)
50 Closed (>40%) broadleaved deciduous forest (>5m)
60 Open (15-40%) broadleaved deciduous forest/woodland (>5m)
70 Closed (>40%) needleleaved evergreen forest (>5m)
90 Open (15-40%) needleleaved deciduous or evergreen forest (>5m)
100 Closed to open (>15%) mixed broadleaved and needleleaved forest (>5m)
110 Mosaic forest or shrubland (50-70%) / grassland (20-50%)
120 Mosaic grassland (50-70%) / forest or shrubland (20-50%)
130 Closed to open (>15%) (broadleaved or needleleaved, evergreen or deciduous) shrubland (<5m)
140 Closed to open (>15%) herbaceous vegetation (grassland, savannas or lichens/mosses)
150 Sparse (<15%) vegetation
160 Closed to open (>15%) broadleaved forest regularly flooded
170 Closed (>40%) broadleaved forest or shrubland permanently flooded - Saline or brackish water
180 Closed to open (>15%) grassland or woody vegetation on regularly flooded or waterlogged soil -
190 Artificial surfaces and associated areas (Urban areas >50%)
200 Bare areas
210 Water bodies
220 Permanent snow and ice
230 No data (burnt areas, clouds,…)

By "burning" the Landscan data into the Globcover the following additional classes
are created:

191 Rural (PopDensity 26 - 50)
192 Rural (PopDensity 51 - 100)
193 Rural (PopDensity 101 - 500)
194 Urban (PopDensity 501 - 2,500)
195 Urban (PopDensity 2,501 - 5,000)
196 Urban (PopDensity 5001 - 130,000)

Hopefully having both Landcover and Population Density classes combined together in one dataset
in such a way obviously might be useful for visulaization and environmental modelling purposes.
Further refinements could be mad for example by adding one of the existing Global forest canopy/biomass
datasets to better classify forests.

GLOBCOVER also is not a perfect land cover map and many areas are misclassified. For example, seasonally
flooded forest around Tonle Sap in Cambodia is mis-identified as irrigated agriculture. A more up-to-date MODIS based landcover product is availabe from NASA/Boston University here: www.bu.edu/lcsc/data-documentation Will open in a new tab or window/
However processing and mosaicing the small HDF format tiles from this project into a useable product would take quite abit of work. Terrain shading would also be a future enhancement.
