Located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenendoah Rivers, Harpers Ferry hosted numerous water-driven factories, including a national armory dedicated to the production of muskets, rifles and pistols beginning in 1799. Repeated floods, and the American Civil War, has left only traces of these industries. Today, Harpers Ferry is administered as a National Historical Park, reflecting its multifaceted role in American history. The armory outfitted Meriwether Lewis, and was the site of John Brown's Raid to gather arms for a failed slave revolt. The town was sacked by Confederates and changed hands several times during the Civil War. After the war, the town was the site of Storer College, which provided educational opportunity to former slaves, and included Frederick Douglass as a trustee.
