A view of the Bario area. Rice Paddies, Rice storage houses and houses can be seen.
Bario is located in a valley in the Kelebit (the indigeneous people of that location) Highlands of Sarawak / Borneo. The rice grown here is very tasty and well known throughout the area. Salt wells nearby were also an important resource in years gone by, and still is produced and sold as a specialty item. To get to Bario, you take a 55 minute flight via Twin Otter to the 600 meter long airstrip, or a very long 4wd trip on rough logging roads. (reportedly 10-14 hours). Although remote, the community is progressive. A community radio station was put up ~3 years ago (the first in Malaysia), e-mail/internet is available in town, cell service is OK, and paved and dirt roads make it easy to get around via walking, motorbike or car.
The food is great too!!!
