Here in the birthplace of Judy Garland, the town chose a Yellow Brick Road theme for fund raising to restore its historic Central School.
Built in 1895, this Romanesque building was one of the first high schools in northern Minnesota. It taught both elementary and high school students in four classrooms on each floor. A weathervane replica of the Spirit of St. Louis replaced its bell in 1931.
When classes were discontinued in 1972, a community-wide fund-raising campaign raised $1 million to restore the building and re-purpose it for small shops. The building retains much of its old character, with the original hardwood floors and slate blackboards.
