Basalt columns in what is apparently an erosional remnant of a ~14 million year old sill related to the Columbia River Basalts. Sills are igneous bodies that insert themselves between existing layers of rock- sandstone, in this case.
The characteristic (roughly) hexagonal columns form as the sill cools, contracts, and solidifies.
