Description

The portico of Santa Maria de Ripoll is a façade that was added on top of previous Santa Maria de Ripoll monastery around the middle of the twelfth century, to decorate the main entrance of the church. This is one of the biggest examples of sculptural decoration in the Catalan Romanesque related to the Tolosa de Llenguadoc school. [1] Built like a Roman triumphal arch, it has a profusion of decorative Old Testament scenes, done by anonymous sculptors, following stories from an ancient Bible still kept at the monastery.
