Festival of Lights

December 2008 marked the 12th Annual Festival of Lights inside Kauai’s Historic County Building, a celebration created by the community to continue a local tradition and preserve the glorious collection of Folk Art created by Auntie Josie Chansky. It all started 50 years ago when Auntie Josie began turning “trash into treasure.” Her glorious creations crafted from humble materials such as soda cans, bottle caps, and styrofoam cups were displayed at her home. Lovingly known as “The Christmas House”, it became a holiday tradition for generations of families who came to see such favorites as a Christmas tree made of 7500 green toothpicks and wreaths made of egg cartons. The Festival of Lights showcases Auntie Josie’s beloved decorations and the dazzling new creations crafted by our volunteers.

“Santa’s Gone Kauaiian” is the annual theme at the Festival of Lights! Every year dazzling mini-lights illuminate the Historic County Building Park. In the twinkling interior, volunteers create delightful "Kauai-style" Christmas touches. “Keiki” (children) can visit Santa and Mrs. Claus in their tropical "Fern Grotto" surrounded by glittering plumeria, hibiscus, anthurium and taro. Visitors will delight to the miniature Hawaiian “hales” (houses) in our “Cane Train” Village and all the treasures that make Kauai so unique -- from rainbows and shave ice to roosters and dolphins! Of course, Auntie Josie's creations from her famous "Kapa'a Christmas House" will be there!

For 2008 Santa could be found Surfing “Tandem” with Mrs. Claus in the glowing barrel of a wave! And visitors enjoyed a truly local-style display: the whimsical "SPAM Tree”. And fanciful new creations are being designed for 2009! Everyone is invited you to step inside the Historic county building and let the magic begin. It is truly a reflection of Kauai’s Aloha Spirit!

Every year the Opening Ceremony is on the first Friday in December from 6-6:30PM and features the Kauai Chorale and Santa leading the fabulous “Lighting Countdown” followed by the Lights on Rice Parade. Throughout the entire month of December the Festival of Lights is Open from 6-8PM every Friday, Saturday and Sunday Evening with Santa and Mrs. Claus including Christmas Eve! FREE!!
