    Image: Black Island, Antarctica
    Image Owner: Ron Hipschman

    Description:

Here's where the resident staff lives. Note the solar cells on the roof. The solar cells have to lie flat because of the (sometimes) 100 mph winds that batter the island.

  3. Fuel tanks

    Image: Black Island, Antarctica
    Image Owner: Ron Hipschman

    Description:

If wind and solar power fail, these tanks hold enough fuel to last quite a while until repair crews can fix the renewable power sources on the island. It's critical that power is maintaind on Black Is...

    Description:

This small (about 10 feet across) sphere contains the TV receiver antenna. It must be housed in this sphere to protect it from the 100 mph winds that sometimes lash the island.

    Description:

Many receive antennas, each for a different frequecy, occupy this field mear the main living quaters and radomes.

  8. High Frequency receiving antenna

    Description:

This provides the continent with HF communications. The transmitting twin of this tower is above McMurdo Station. Both antennas are located far away from each other to prevent interference.
