I swear I had auto-exposure lock on. But yet again, darkness around the sides. Perhaps too short exposure time?

    Perhaps the darkness you're seeing is caused by the lens vignetting. I would try stopping the lens down as far as it will go and shooting it again. I've discovered that I simply can't tolerate a gigapan taken with my Canon G10 unless the aperture is set to f/8.
