Across the street from Sam Houston State University is the Sam Houston Museum and park complex. The pond shown is properly named Lake Oolooteca, per the museum website:
"When Sam was a boy in Tennessee, he ran away from home to live with the Cherokee Indians on Hiwasee Island. He was adopted by Chief Oolooteca and given the name Coloneh - the Raven. Later, after his resignation of the Governorship of Tennessee, he went home to his Cherokee brothers, who had been forcibly relocated to Oklahoma. The lake has been named after his adoptive Cherokee father."
It is the home of ducks, geese, turtles and small fish. Local photographers use it as a common backdrop for portraits. While shooting the gigapan, three different photogs were doing shoots nearby.
