Kulmbach on a cold winter morning (right after Christmas 2008). I took the panorama from the Plassenburg castle (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plassenburg
) which looms above the old town.The panorama was stitched with PTGui and saved as a TIF image. For upload to the Gigapan website I had to reduce the original size from 2.34 GPixels to 0.6 GPixels.
The 432 images were taken with my Lumix FZ28 (at 12x zoom; focal length 35mm equiv.: 347.0 mm) and my homebuilt robotic panorama head.Some images got lost somehow, so I had to reconstruct these from the neighboring images and a low-resolution overview image (taken at 1x zoom).

Dear Thomas, Ron, Looks like you are the experts. I have a small favor to ask you. Do you know how I can share my panoramas with friends without uploading them to Gigapan? Also i am willing to buy a new camera and I am a bit confused between the Canon SX20 IS and the Panasonic FZ38. Which one do you recommend? Thank you for your help. Cheers, Karim

Ron, when I tried uploading a larger version of the pano ( TIFF with LZW compression) with almost 2 GByte the uploader crashed when the status bar showed 98% completion (that happend twice...) Uploading was finally successful when I reduced the file size to 1.4 GByte (I also removed the alpha channel, but I don't know if this is really necessary) You are right: with PTGui one can export to psd and psb (Photoshop large document PSB 'supports layered output of up to 300,000 x 300,000 pixels, and allows for file sizes of more than 4GB'). Maybe I should get Photoshop and have try... Actually there is a version of the panorama at full resolution (made with the Gigapan Stitcher), which is, however, heavily distorted. gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?auth=40 f39e5f08e4291f750cc0bddf99dd10You can see that the resolution is only a little bit better. I guess that the curvature of the panorama is a result of lens distortion at 18x zoom. In PTGui this is not a problem since I can easily level the panorama by specifying some vertical lines within the panorama. Tom

Thomas, Lovely panorama - I just wish we could have seen it at full resolution. It seems senseless to have to reduce any image's size to get it onto the GigaPan website. I assume this was an issue with saving it as a TIF file from PTGui. Does PTGui have any other export options that might allow you to preserve the full size image and still upload it to GigaPan.org? Obviously I don't have PTGui, but isn't there some sort of export capability that would allow you to send the full size image to Photoshop? From Photoshop I know you can output to Photoshop RAW format (not to be confused with camera RAW format) which has no filesize restrictions that I've run into yet. Photoshop RAW can then be directly uploaded to the GigaPan.org website. Ron
