Rt 36 Bridge at Sandy Hook, NJ by Don

The view from the bottom of Sandy Hook, NJ, looking south at the Route 36 bridge, and west at boats in winter storage, Feb 28, 2009. The Atlantic ocean is just off to the left of the image, the Shrewsbury River flows under the bridge going to the right, into Sandy Hook Bay. The cranes are being used to replace the bridge. The “Twin Lights of the Navesink” are on top of the hill. This is the highest point on the eastern seaboard. It was quite windy when taking this, so may not be as sharp as it could be.

From a twin lights web site ”Twin Lights is situated 200 feet above sea level in Highlands, New Jersey. It overlooks the Shrewsbury River, Sandy Hook, Raritan Bay, New York skyline and the Atlantic Ocean. Twin Lights has been used as an aid to navigation over the coastal waters of NJ since 1828. It was used as the primary lighthouse for New York Harbor and was known as the best and the brightest light in North America. The current lighthouse was built in 1862 and replaced the earlier lights which were beginning to deteriorate.”
