  3. GOES Dome

    Description:

    The GOES satellite provides telephone and internet services to the South Pole for about 7 hours a day. The access time varies, beginning and ending a few minutes earlier each day.

    Description:

    These heavy, banded cartons arrive at the Pole flat. Setting them up is no small task on a cold, dark winter day. When they are assembled, they are used for storage and as waste containers.

  6. Trade Shops

    Description:

    In the summer, these Quonset Huts house the plumbing and carpenter shops. In the winter, the plumbers, electricians, carpenters and UT's work in their shops in the arches.



  7. The South Pole Christmas Tree

    Description:

    During the holidays this tree stood near the Geographic South Pole. Santa should have no trouble finding it there. Here you see it stored on the berms, where it is a lot less noticeable.

    Description:

    This retrograde cargo is ready for its flight back to McMurdo. From there it will be placed on a ship and returned to the United States.

  14. Snowmobile

    Description:

    We use these vehicles year-round, although we try not to take them out when the temperature falls below -70 degrees Fahrenheit. Helmets are mandatory at the South Pole and the speed limit is 10 mph.
