Harrisburg’s State Street strikingly leads from the Pennsylvania State Capitol to the Susquehanna River and Kunkel Plaza, and was early established as a wide boulevard, later improved with a grass mall down its center emanating from the City Beautiful Movement. Here are erected several of the City’s finest church edifices and rows of elegant townhouses. At the corner of Front and State Streets (right) stands the home of Sen. J. Donald Cameron, Simon Cameron’s son, and President Grant’s Secretary of War. Farther to the right is the William Maclay mansion, now headquarters of the Pennsylvania Bar Association. Maclay was one of America’s first US senators and was responsible for assisting in laying out the town of Harrisburg in 1785.
