As I recall, Joe Biden, when he came to the podium, one of his initial comments was that James Baker had more integrity in the joint of his small finger than all the members of Congress combined. What a memorable statement that a democrat, the Vice President of the United States saying that about James Baker, III, the lawyer who throughhis legal expertise, and in front of the Supreme Court gave the electoral votes of Florida to Bush II ... remember the chads?

I don't know the politicians concerned but is it cynical of me to wonder if the reason they are being civil to each other is that there were no TV crews there? Half-joking.

It is indeed a rare case these two incredible people, from both political sides treating each with respect. I can't think of two younger politicians being this close in a public forum. LBJ and Everett Dirksen maintained a very warm active friendship even while LBJ was President: articles.chicagotribune.com/1996-1 0-20/news/9610200245_1_white-house-tapes-everett-d irksen Will open in a new tab or window

That sounds like what I would call proper politics i.e. politicians treating each other like human beings. A refreshing change what the regular media outlets serve up: if someone hasn't said something outrageous or divisive, it doesn't get reported. IMO of course :-)
