Fort Riley was established in 1853 along the banks of the Kansas River and near the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. It has been home to the famous 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments, the "Buffalo Soldiers" and is again home to The Big Red One. The post is also home to the First Capitol of the Kansas Territory (1855).
This image was taken later in the day the Konza Prairie image was taken. That location is only a few miles away. The skies have darkened due to the large number of prairie fires being burned in the flint hills.

The Atomic Cannon
This remnant of the cold war era is one of 20 produced of which 8 still exist. The M65 has a 42 foot barrel and fires an 11 inch projectile. This cannon is part of Freedom Park near Junction City, KS, sits atop the hills overlooking Fort Riley and can be seen from I-70 passing below.
