Description

Here is one of the biggest limbs I've encountered on a redwood. Too bad many of the photographs used to make this were blurry. The lower canopy of this old-growth forest is very dark, and I had to set the exposure for low light.

Any chance that big limb is like 5 to 6 feet in diameter? Just a guess judging by how the bark has started to furrow on the leaders sprouted from it. The bigger trunk on the limb, the darker one, looks like it might be 24" to 30" in diameter. Any evidence that the main trunk may have broken once, lending some vigour to this monster limb? M. D. Wow, I've read about the complexity of large redwoods, but nothing conveys it like a photo. Thanks. I hope you'll have a chance to try more along these lines.
