Super Cool : ) I really enjoy your SEM panoramas. You can barely see that the RBCs are concave. They typically have an average lifespan of 120 days in humans and measure about 0.7 microns across. They need to bend to fit through the capillaries off of the metarterioles. They have lost their nucleus and organelles in order to increase the surface area for maximizing gas exchange. The kidney's sense a low oxygen level and secrete the hormone EPO which stimulates erythropoiesis in the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. The spleen's dense matrix helps filter old RBCs so they can be broken down and the liver recycles the bilirubin. A low MCV ( mean corpuscle value ) is a sign of anemia. A larger MCV is a sign of a vitamin B-12 deficiency. Some people do not absorb vitamin B well because of a lack of intrinsic factor in the small intestine.
