A System for Studying the Mouse Odometer - Daniel Greene, Alan Daniel, Charles Gallistel
Odometry is the ability of animals to estimate their location and distance traveled without the use of landmarks. Because it is computationally straightforward, understanding how odometry works may shed light on the general computational abilities of the brain. We built and have begun testing a self-contained living environment that assesses the ability of mice to remember distances run in a wheel. We hope to use the system as a basis for widespread genetic screening of odometry.
