Shard Villa was built in Salisbury, Vermont in 1872-74 after attorney Columbus Smith earned a fortune reclaiming Mary Shard's estate from the English Crown during a 14 year court case. Seven years later Smith's 14 year old son died, and 16 years later he lost his daughter. The entire family is buried in a mausoleum on the property, and stories of ghosts and hauntings have swirled through the 30 rooms of statues and frescoes ever since. Smith's wife willed her estate so the mansion would become a home for the elderly, which it has been since 1922 when an addition was built for this purpose.
