Description

233-245 Eighth Avenue at Ann Street

Left to Right:

233 Eighth Avenue:

The building at 233 Eighth Avenue is a three story structure of masonry construction. The building fronts 36 feet onto Eighth Avenue and pre-dates 1913. The building could be considered a fairly typical example of early 20th century American commercial architecture. Comprised of a light sandstone and glazed brick, the most notable features of the building today include the inlaid patterning in green glazed brick and what appear to be the original, wooden framed windows--complete with leaded glass transom elements. Historically, the building served as a commercial storefront on the 1st floor with "flats" on the 2nd and 3rd floors. The plot of land upon which the building is built was originally sold to R.C. Wagner.

235 Eighth Avenue:

The building at 235 Eighth Avenue is a two story structure of brick, masonry construction. The building fronts 24 feet onto Eighth Avenue and pre-dates 1900. The building is an example of the first wave of development occurring along Homestead's Eighth Avenue commercial corridor. The facade of the building is comprised of brick and rough-hewn stone (there is ambiguity as to the type of stone used as the facade has been painted.) Post-1913, the building served as a hotel. The plot of land upon which the building is built was originally sold to M. Catalano.

237 Eighth Avenue:

The building at 237 Eighth Avenue is a three story structure of wooden construction with a brick, masonry facade. The building fronts 30 feet onto Eighth Avenue and dates from between 1900 and 1913. The building once served as the Hotel MacMath. The plot of land upon which the building is built was originally sold to J. MacMath, Esq.

239 Eighth Avenue:

241 and 243 Eighth Avenue:

245 Eighth Avenue:
