Description

Taken sitting on the edge of the escarpment of Salisbury Plain. The horse looks lovely at a distance but when you get up close it is a rather disappointing modern concrete thing rather than chalk. It is probably not terribly old as there is no record of it before 1742 (it says here). As with all these ‘chalk’ figures it has been re-cut many times and the design changed often. Apparently this one used to face the other way. From here you also get a superb view of the cement works.

It *is* disappointingly modern. The horse even has a drain grating in it. You can't quite make it out but iirc it is at the bottom of the horse's belly.
