Description

There is an inscription at this site from the 17th poet Constantijn Huygens: QUEM DABIS HAEC POSSIT QUI DARE CUNCTA LOCUM?

Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands. Halfway through the first century BC the first inhabitants settled on the river Waal. Around the beginning of our calendar the Batavians founded , the 'Oppidum Batavorum': the city of Batavians on a hill with a good overview of the River. Today this hill is known under the name Valkhof where the remains of several castles of princes and rulers from the past (Emperor Charlemagne and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa). The view over the Waal from the edge of the hill is impressive.
