Alvorada Palace

(Palace of Dawn), designed by Oscar Niemeyer, is the official residence of the President of Brazil. One of the first buildings to be built in Brasilia, its name comes from JK's quote: «... I look towards the future of my country and foresee this dawn with unbreakable faith in its great destiny...». It was inaugurated on June 30, 1958

The building has an area of 7,000 m2 and three floors: basement, landing and second floor. The auditorium, kitchen, laundry, medical center, and the administration are at basement level. The rooms used by the presidency for official receptions are on the landing. There are four suites, two apartments and other private rooms on the second floor which is the residential part of the palace. The Alvorada Palace also has a library, a heated Olympic-sized swimming pool, a music room, two dining rooms and various meeting rooms. There is a chapel and heliport in adjacent buildings.

More about Brasilia: The Capital City of Brazil created ex nihilo (out of nothing) in the centre of the country in 1956, was a landmark in the history of town planning. Inaugurated in 1960 (April 21st) it has a population of about 2,557,000 as of the 2008 census estimate, making it the fourth largest city in Brazil.

Brasilia is a masterpiece of modernist architecture. It is the only city in the world built in the 20th century to be awarded (in 1987) the status of Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Brasilia is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2010.

Palácio da Alvorada

Residência oficial do presidente da Republica , é uma das obras-primas de Oscar Niemeyer. Foi projetado em 1956, antes mesmo da escolha do Plano Piloto da nova capital.
É um edifício retangular de dois pavimentos e um subsolo e tem como principal elemento as colunas de mármore branco que emolduram as fachadas longitudinais e tornaram símbolo da capital. Uma pequena capela lateral completa o conjunto.
No Alvorada, existem obras de arte como as esculturas As Banhistas, de Ceschiatti, e Rito dos Ritmos, de Maria Martins. É de autoria de Athos Bulcão a parede de azulejos dourados localizada no hall de entrada, a porta e o vitral da capela. O paisagismo é de Roberto Burle Marx.

Hoje é a quarta maior cidade do Brasil, com mais de 2.557.000 habitantes (Censo 2008). Brasília é um Patrimônio Cultural da Humanidade, UNESCO, desde 7 de dezembro de 1987.
