Underneath the white covering is the USS CAIRO, an iron clad ship that was sunk during the seige at Vicksburg in the Civil War. It was sunk about a mile away from where it currently sits. The river you seein the distance is the Yazzoo river where the Cairo sank. It is currently undergoing a restoration using many of its original parts.

You can also see behind the Cairo is the National vicksburg Cemetary. This is where the Union soldiers are buried.
