Description

This 19th century cottage, located along North Third Street on Connellsville's west side, is potentially one of the City's oldest homes. Built in a modest rendition of the Italian Renaissance Style, this cottage is, without doubt, the City's most ornately appointed and historically complete home. Nearly everything regarding this building is original, including arched, wooden-framed windows complete with cylinder glass. Floor-length windows grace the front porch. Stained glass accents a small room off of the entry hall. A quatrefoil window in a semi-circular gable centers the composition and draws the eye upward to the cupola. Large over-hanging eves complete with original brackets create an aesthetically pleasing transition from building to roof. Local residents have also commented the the interior fittings are just as original and just as breathtaking as the rest of the cottage.

As of 8-7-09, this building has been condemned by the City of Connellsville, despite the extremely sound appearance of the main building. Instability of a minor addition in the rear may have prompted the condemnation of the entire structure.

Connellsville, Pennsylvania is very much a financially distressed city in which the administration fails to see the potential of its historic buildings. Despite this, a critical mass exists in the community to rejuvenate the once bustling city.
