Brasilia Ministerios
"Driving down the Eixo Monumental, I find myself captivated by the orderly ranks of 17 ministerial buildings. Each is an identical, uncompromising slab of office block with gold lettering and jade-green window blinds. They remind me of those old Benson&Hedges ads, when a glistening box of cigarettes would be deftly inserted into unlikely locations". - Nigel Tisdall.
"The ministry buildings lining the avenue are all identical, more functional than interesting. But they were probably so designed to heighten the contrast to those that lie beyond: the beautiful Justice Ministry, with waterfalls springing from its facade, and, opposite, the elegant Foreign Ministry in Itamarati Palace and then the huge Plaza of Three Powers, lined with the towers and convex and concave bowls of Congress, the President's Planalto Palace and the Supreme Court." - Alan Riding.
More about Brasilia: The Capital City of Brazil created ex nihilo (out of nothing) in the centre of the country in 1956, was a landmark in the history of town planning. Inaugurated in 1960 (April 21st) it has a population of about 2,557,000 as of the 2008 census estimate, making it the fourth largest city in Brazil.
Brasilia is a masterpiece of modernist architecture. It is the only city in the world built in the 20th century to be awarded (in 1987) the status of Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Brasilia is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2010.
