The Pomona Cotton mill, parts of which date from 1897, comes down. After decades as a textile mill, the building was used as Western Electric plant and spent its last viable years as a shopping complex. The creaky wooden floors and high ceilings at Cotton Mill Square made it a unique destination. After an electrical main failed, the complex closed. Empty for 10 years, the building deteriorated and no one could be found to invest in and save the historic structure. Sadly, it's a scene familiar across the South with the decline of the American textile industry. More history: preservationgreensboro.typepad.com/weblog/2008/01/will-the-pomona.html
