GeoCam Blog: http://disastercam.blogspot.com/

The GeoCam Project uses GPS-enabled camera phones and web-based sharing of photos and maps to help disaster responders get up-to-date information faster. On September 25-26, 2009, GeoCam visited the Guiberson Fire, which burned 17,500 acres near Moorpark, CA, northwest of Los Angeles. We issued eight GeoCam camera phones to field observers and generated a map with more than 80 geotagged photos uploaded from the field. The firefighters had lots of suggestions on how to improve our equipment and software but overall were very positive and want to continue using the system.

While we were at the fire, we also wanted to evaluate the usefulness of GigaPan imagery for post-fire damage assessment and rehabilitation. This GigaPan, taken on a hilltop next to the Grimes Canyon Road, covers a broad area of burned vegetation. We hope it will help guide decisions like what areas need rehab to prevent landslides.

We just forwarded the link to a bunch of folks who worked at the fire and hopefully will hear what they thought in the next few days.

What did they think of the Gigapans for evaluating erosion? Useful?

Where in the World is this GigaPan?
