After 55 years in the business, local Pittsburgh guitar shop Lawrence Music is still going strong. Located in Castle Shannon, Pennsylvania, Lawrence Music has been Pittsburgh’s guitar store since 1954. Founded by Vic Lawrence, a guitar instructor whose pupils included famous Pittsburgh “handyman” Joe Negri, Lawrence Music continues to serve Pittsburgh with a teaching staff, service center, and an award winning sales department with nearly 800 guitars and basses in stock.

The history of Lawrence Music is as interesting and rooted in the community as the store itself, “Lawrence music isn’t like one person, it’s like this place has a life of its own… it’s not just me… and this store will be here long after I’m gone,” current owner Brad Johnson said. Vic Lawrence founded the store in 1954 and quickly found success selling guitars and basses, and giving lessons. In 1979 Vic Lawrence sold the store to Russ Lawrence (no relation to the original owner), and in 1984 Lawrence Music acquired its most popular brand of instruments, Fender. Brad Johnson, who himself began taking lessons in the store in 1973, and subsequently became an employee there, purchased the store on January 1st, 1989. “I kind of just grew into the place,” Johnson says of his path from customer, to student, to employee and then owner.

Many of the instructors at Lawrence Music share a similar experience with Johnson. “It seems like a lot of the teachers down here were students at one time also, and went on to go to school for music and then end up teaching, so it’s kind of like a home grown organization,” Johnson says. Lawrence Music features seven teachers that serve the local musical community. The teaching staff has experience in rock, blues, country, classical and many other styles of guitar, bass and even banjo. Every teacher there has earned at least a four year college degree and is a full time professional musician. The shop’s teachers also use a fiber optic network to enhance the learning experience through sharing teaching materials between the instructors and allowing each instructor to access a huge array of resources.

Lawrence Music’s award-winning sales department keeps around 800 guitars and basses from four different brands in stock. Their most popular brand is Fender, for which they have been selected as “Dealer of the Year” and hold high certifications from Fender for sales, service and repair. Johnson elaborates, “We’re a gold level service center, which is the highest service center ranking you can get from Fender… there is nothing that they sell that we can’t fix in house.” Lawrence Music carries Fender, Squier, Samick, and Seagull brand instruments, and Fender and brand amplifiers. The store also carries a wide range of accessories, such as strings, picks, straps, pedals, cases and general maintenance items.

Lawrence Music is located at 985 Castle Shannon Boulevard, in Pittsburgh, PA. More information about their store, teachers and service department is available on their website, www.lawrencemusic.com Will open in a new tab or window, and they can be reached by telephone at 412-563-2264.
