- Description
-
First permanent headquarters for the nation's first black opera company, known as the National Negro Opera Company, started here in 1941 by Mary Cardwell Dawson. Built in 1894, the house was purchased in 1930 by William A. "Woogie" Harris, one of the largest "numbers" kingpins in the U.S. at the time, along with Gus Greenlee, owner of the Pittsburgh Crawfords Negro League Team. The house was known as "Mystery Manor." After Mrs. Dawson left, in 1943, Harris rented it out to others in the 1950s and '60s, including Roberto Clemente, numerous Steelers, Lena Horne, and other notables. Harris died in 1967, but the house has sat vacant since the mid-1990s. The house was declared a City of Pittsburgh historic landmark in 2008 and is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
