Description

Valley oaks are some of the largest in California, growing from sixty to sometimes more that a hundred feet tall. The large acorns were gathered and eaten by the Miwok and Volvon peoples who lived in these hills. Many of these trees were apparently planted around the village sites. Dying and dead valley oaks often remain marking the old village sites. New trees of this variety - and oaks in general - seem to only come from deliberately planted acorns. They do not seem to be replacing themselves, but dozens of new oaks are coming up here where we planted hundreds of acorns. Thousands of new oaks are coming up along roadways and our favorite trails where we have planted. I would encourage anyone who cares about habitat to learn how to restore habitats by planting local seeds and sharing the knowledge of how to do this with others. Individuals do make a difference and both children and adults enjoy seeing their efforts change the landscapes for the better.

This pond is an oasis for life. Ducks, blackbirds, bluebirds, hawks, gold eagles, falcons, coyoties, bobcats, and even mountain lions are seen here.
