Panama Canal from Gold Hill by Natalia Hoyos

This panorama looks to the north and was shot at the famous "Culebra Cut', the most difficult excavation site during the entire construction of the Panama Canal. In this gigapan, we can see a geological sequence of approximately 17-15 Ma. This sequence includes shallow marine deposits, continental soil horizons and volcanic lava flows.

Our research intends to establish more precise dates for this sequence, and to determine the relationship between fossils found in these layers and the fauna of North and South America. This is critical to understand the biological effects of the formation of the Central America land bridge.
