Description

Cupples Stadium.

Located right on South Side's diverse main street, East Carson, between 7th Street and 9th Street is George Cupples Stadium (formally known as South Stadium), which has a 9,700 seating facility. This home to Pittsburgh public school sports teams and city league teams underwent 4 million dollars worth of renovations in 2005. Then just last year in June the Pittsburgh Steelers football team, the NFL Youth Football Fund and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)/Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development (PPND), awarded Pittsburgh public schools a $200,000 grant to do even more to renovate the stadium. “We are very pleased to award the NFL Grassroots grant to Pittsburgh Public Schools for the Cupples Stadium refurbishment,” David Light, Director of Real Estate and Lending at PPND said. “It is a project that hits the mark on all levels as it serves the students and the community and will be a physical improvement in one of the City’s many great neighborhoods.”

This provides a great opportunity for Pittsburgh public schools to continue to give its students a more rewarding experience.
“We place a high emphasis on supporting youth football in Pittsburgh and are pleased to help Cupples Stadium continue to be a special place for our City League football teams,” said Steelers President Art Rooney. “We are proud to continue our tradition of partnering with the NFL and LISC to help refurbish
fields throughout the Pittsburgh area.”

The NFL Youth Football Fund Grassroots Program is a partnership of the National Football League Youth Football Fund. They give grants to help support youth football and to help build better local football fields. The NFL grassroots program believes that local football fields can help serve the community in multiple ways, one being a source of “recreation, and relaxation that contribute to the local quality of life.”
Being a part of the South Side community myself, I definitely see this a something very positive for my neighborhood. I live directly behind Cupples Stadium and get to witness on a daily basis just what this stadium has to offer the public. In the mornings many use this as a place to get in a nice refreshing run and during the sports seasons many families come together to watch the young people compete. Cupples Stadium is absolutely one of South Sides positive attractions. Having this stadium here in South Side, not only provides a positive atmosphere for the people in our neighborhood but also for people all over Pittsburgh. It’s also a great way to bring in business to South Side. People will come from all over the Pittsburgh area during high school football season and that in turn brings revenue to the local businesses. Nearly 12,000 people expected to use Cupples Stadium each year.
