Makapu'u is famous for its fishing and powerful surf. In Hawaiian Makapu'u means "bulging eyes." Just off-shore, Manana Island, also known as "Rabbit Island", because it was once inhabited by shipped-in rabbits, and Kaohikaip, a volcanic islet are today both bird sanctuaries and thus off-limits for landing boats.
