Horseshoe Bend is located in West View, PA, only 6 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh- It is up the street from where the old West View Amusement Park use to stand, now a shopping center. West View is the home of Betsy Ann Chocolates- with its factory located right here on Horseshoe Bend. West View is also the home of Isalys- a small cafe that is so famous in Pittsburgh it's been on a few television shows for its famous deli meats (especially the chipped ham) and for its famous Gyros sandwich and a couple other things. It has also been put on the Pittsburgh edition of Monopoly.
Horseshoe Bend was created in 1849. It was first made out of wood planks. It was created to help mules and horses get up to the top of the steep hill of North Park Road easier by taking them around the steep grade of the hill instead of straight up it, which they had been doing since about 1905. Between 1910 and 1911, the wood planks were replaced with bricks- some roads in Bellevue and Avalon areas of West View are still made from bricks. A lot of streets are really narrow, since there really was not much traffic in the early 1900,s there was no use for two lane streets. If you ever drive through West View and surrounding areas, you'll notice plenty of old buildings that have been around since the borough was founded. Even the house of the very first settler in 1794, Casper Reel, is still around, although the original log cabin house has been covered over with more modern materials. It sits at 148 Geaorgetown Avenue. Two of Casper's ten children grew up to become important figures in West View. One became the founder of a church that still is around today, and is actually the church I belong to, West View Methodist Church. Today the church is painted a light blue color and has the beauty of age. The other became the first postmaster in the area and also built his house where the on a hill that is now the Highland Country Club Golf Course. As a kid I use to sled ride in the golf course in a place people around West View call Death Valley; yes people have died, but if you were careful it was fun. It consisted of two steep hills facing one another. One of the hills flattened out in two spots to create an effect that flew your sled into the air like ramps. After sled riding all day we would walk a couple blocks down the street to my Grandmother's house. She would make us hot chocolate and food and always loved to tell stories, it is one of my favorite memories of my childhood.
In 2008, West View had a population of 6,677 people- 8.2% less then in 2000. It is located about 6 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. Some other facts about West View-

West View is home of North Hills School District which is where I went to school all twelve years, including kindergarten. The school is very well known for it's band. The North Hills band was chosen out of thousands of schools to march in a parade for President Bush down in Washington DC. A lot of the teachers have taught for generations, I have heard several stories of my family when they were in school.
