One of two sites in the world where the rare yellow flowered Spring Beauty thrives. Claytonia virginica var hammondiae differs fromt he species in that the petals and anthers are yellow to yellow/orange. The nearest populartion of the species resides some 18 km away. This species is unique in that it prefers a very wet and acidic environment and that it blooms much later than the species.
