vol 3 issue 1 Shot onboard our borrowed 18ft Maravia while at camp above Hance Rapid, this GigaPan provides a glimpse at the vital gear that got us through the Canyon. Because Hance is accessible from the rim, boaters often run into hikers at this camp. We met up with several hikers that were out of water and rightly concerned that the silty Colorado River water would clog their filters. They intended on starting out for the rim immediately and didn't have time to settle river water before filtering. We, too, were running low on filtered water, but filled up half of their water bottles immediately and advised them to wait for us to settle and filter more. They said that they could not, so we offered them beer, which they were very excited to enjoy. As they were leaving, I asked them if they were going to fill their remaining water bottles with river water to settle and filter later. They had not considered this an option, but decided that was a prudent move. When hiking in a desert, never pass a source of water without filling every container you have.
